Sodium Hydroxide, also known as lye, is necessary in the making of soap.  Handmade soap is made with a process called saponification.  This process is the mixing of lye (sodium hydroxide), water, & oils to create a chemical reaction that effectively bonds them all together.  This process also creates glycerin, a natural humectant that draws moisture to the skin.  This is yet another reason why handmade soap is so much better for you.
